ALEBRIJES (aleˈβɾixes]) Also known as Oaxacan wood carving. Are hand crafted by the copal wood, A small tree native to the tropical dry forests of indigenous parts of southern Mexico. Alebrijes can be carved in to many different animals as well as fantasy and mystical creatures.
Diligently worked on by many of indigenous families in the villages of Oaxaca Mexico, Can take several weeks if not months to complete .

- The Original alebrije was introduced by Pedro Linares Lopez. Pedro had suffered from Peritonitis which caused him to experience hallucinations. It was while dreaming were he was seeing what he ended up calling the "ALEBRIJES". He later started making alebrije out of paper Mache. While Pedro was in the US he introduced the alebrije to Manuel Jiménez Ramírez. Manuel later revamped to traditional animals with brighter colors; and made it into what is now known as "Oaxacan Wood Carving"
